Troubleshooting your ZT111 printer

Follow this comprehensive troubleshooting guide for the Zebra ZT111 printer. We cover common errors, print quality issues, connectivity problems, and when to contact support.

Printer is not powering on

If your printer is not powering on, possible causes include:

  • Power switch is off

  • Power cable is not properly connected

  • Faulty power outlet

  • Defective power supply

To troubleshoot the printer, please do the following:

  1. Ensure the power cable is securely connected to the printer and power outlet and that the power switch is turned to the on position.

  2. Try a different power outlet to see if this causes a different response.

  3. Check for any damage to the power cable and replace if necessary.

  4. If the printer still does not power on, contact the support team.

Quality of print is poor (faded, smudged, or uneven)

If your prints are poor quality, possible causes include:

  • Wrinkled ribbon

  • Incorrect printhead pressure

  • Labels wrapped around platen roller

  • Incorrect calibration

  • Label media improperly fed through printer

To fix print quality, please do the following:

  1. Inspect your ribbon for wrinkles and proper tension. Your heat transfer ribbon should be taut and not wrinkled.

  2. To resolve this, open the printhead and straighten out the label by rolling the media ribbon.

  3. You may need to manually adjust the ribbon with your fingers.

  4. Close the printhead. You will know it is fully secured when you hear a click/thunk.

  5. Please ensure that you have a cardboard core in the return spindle.

  6. Additionally, make sure there are no labels, tape, or other objects stuck to or under the platen roller area.

  7. Next, make sure the ribbon supply spindle and ribbon take-up spindle use the same tension setting (normal or low tension). Normal tension setting is used for most applications. If you are using narrow ribbon or experience certain ribbon issues, you may need to lower the ribbon tension.

  8. To place the ribbon spindles in the normal position, firmly pull out each spindle end cap until it extends and clicks in place. Use this setting for most applications.

Printer does not recognize media or ribbon

If your printer does not recognize media or ribbon, possible causes include:

  • Incorrect media or ribbon installation

  • Dirty or faulty media sensor

  • Unsupported media type

  • Incorrect media orientation

To fix this issue, please do the following:

  1. Open the media door and verify that the media and ribbon are installed correctly.

  2. Clean the media sensor using a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol.

  3. Ensure that the media type is compatible with the ZT111 printer.

Below is an image of the correct media orientation.

Media is jammed or prints are skewed

If your printer is experiencing media jams or skewed prints, possible causes include:

  • Misaligned or improperly fed media

  • Worn-out platen roller

  • Debris inside the printer

To fix printer issues, please do the following:

  1. Open the printer and remove any jammed media.

  2. Ensure that the large yellow media guide is aligned snug against the roll of labels.

  3. Ensure the media is loaded straight and aligned along the track inside of the ZT111 printer. The metal guides should not put pressure on the labels but guide them smoothly in the proper orientation.

  4. Inspect the platen roller for wear or foreign objects stuck to it, then clean it with a lint-free cloth.

  5. Restart the printer and perform a test print.

Printer is not connecting to USB

If your printer is not connecting to USB, possible causes include:

  • Loose or damaged cables

To reconnect the printer to USB, please do the following:

  1. Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to the back of the printer and to the USB hub and/or base of the JPS.

  2. Restart both the printer and the connected device.
