How to dispose of glycol probes
This article describes the proper way of disposing of SmartSense Probes. Below is an image of a glycol probe.
SmartSense glycol probes contain a small amount of propylene glycol, a low-toxicity fluid. The liquid is clear, contains no color, and has a syrupy consistency at room temperature. Disposal requirements vary by local, state, and federal regulations. Please follow applicable rules in your area.
Probe Disposal
Dispose of the probe as solid waste if permitted by your local waste facility.
Do not recycle unless explicitly accepted by your local recycling facility.
Glycol Fluid Disposal
- Keep the glycol sealed inside the probe if possible.
- Do not pour glycol down a drain unless your local wastewater facility allows it.
- Drain disposal rules vary for residential, commercial, and healthcare settings.
- Disposal into storm drains or outdoors is prohibited.
If you still have questions, check your organization’s environmental and safety procedures or contact your local wastewater facility for more information to ensure compliance with environmental laws.
Note: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes propylene glycol as a safe additive. If you come into contact with propylene glycol, you can reference this article from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).
