How to install and calibrate a NIST sensor to a Z sensor
Follow this tutorial for assistance with your NIST-calibrated sensor install.
A NIST sensor is an external calibrated temperature probe that you can connect to your Z sensor on either port one or port two. The Z sensor allows for up to two NIST sensors to be connected at one time via the two available ports. The process for a new NIST sensor and a replacement sensor is similar.
All SmartSense Z sensors can be provided with a traceable calibration certificate that meets the requirements of and complies with ISO 17025. The traceable certificate indicates that the product is traceable to standards provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a U.S. Government agency within the Commerce Department.
Customers commonly require this in the health/medicine field or anyone who requires a higher level of proof of accuracy on their sensors.

The NIST calibration process is provided via a removable, and replaceable NIST calibrated temperature and/or humidity probe. This probe is installed in one of the external ports of your Z sensor. The companion NIST calibration certificate will appear in your SmartSense account automatically.

Recalibration services are available by ordering a new NIST-calibrated probe with a new 24-month term.
Getting Started
Before you begin the installation, please make sure you have:
- NIST sensor
- Z sensor
You may also have NIST humidity and temperature sensor envelopes which will be sealed. Please do not discard.
New installations
Unscrew the port cover cap then skip to step 2 of Sensor Replacement.
Sensor replacement
- Unscrew the existing sensor.
- Line up the arrow on the port with the arrow on the NIST sensor.
- Carefully screw in the sensor so as not to damage the pins. The NIST sensor should be screwed on/off by hand without using wrenches, pliers, or other tools as this can potentially break the pins.
- Place the Z sensor back inside your fridge or freezer asset when complete.
Note: While most often only one probe is used, it is possible to use both ports concurrently should you require another type of calibrated probe to be attached.
