Common issues with platen rollers and clips
Improper handling such as forcibly removing paper jams may cause the clips or roller to break.
As essential components wear down with time, they may degrade, affecting device performance. When this issue occurs, repair or replacement is often necessary to restore your printer to optimal working conditions.
Warranty coverage for the platen roller and components
Jolt printer warranties do not cover the platen roller or its clips as these are considered wear items. This means that users are responsible for the replacement costs of these components. However, your warranty will still apply to defects outside of regular wear and tear.
Tips for preventing damage to platen rollers
To extend the life of your platen roller and associated parts, consider the following practices:
Follow the printer’s manual to safely clear paper jams and avoid unnecessary strain on components.
Clean and inspect the platen roller periodically to minimize debris buildup.
Always use recommended paper types and sizes to ensure optimal operation.
Tools you will need
New platen roller clips (if applicable)
70% rubbing alcohol wipe or alcohol prep pad (optional)
Instructions
Turn off and unplug the printer.
Open the printer cover by pulling the latches on either side to expose the inside.
Remove any media (labels) from the printer.
Locate the platen roller (the long black rubber cylinder), which helps feed the media through the printer, and remove it from the printer.
There are usually two small clips or latches on either end of the platen roller.
Use your fingers to gently lift these clips, being careful not to damage the surrounding components as you remove the platen roller.
If you need to replace the clips, carefully detach the old clips from their slots.
The left clip has a plastic gear, which can be pulled gently from the roller.
Insert the new clips into place, making sure they are secure.
The plastic gear needs to be placed on the end with the flat metal portion.
Clean the platen roller channel with an alcohol wipe or lint-free cloth so it is free of debris.
Reinstall the platen roller by aligning it with the clips and gently slide it back into position. The roller should click into place when seated correctly.
Close the printer cover by gently lowering it until it clicks shut.
Plug the printer back into a nearby outlet and turn it on.
Finally, run a test print to ensure the platen roller and clips are working properly.
