How to Retire an Asset or Location
If you have an asset or location that is no longer active, we recommend retiring those as soon as possible for best practice.
- After logging in to your SmartSense account, hover over the ADMIN TAB and select ORGANIZATION MANAGEMENT.
-
On this page, you can either use the SEARCH function to locate a specific asset or navigate down the hierarchy levels until you locate the asset you wish to retire. Let's first learn how to retire a single asset.
How to Retire a Single Asset
- In the last step, we located the asset we want to retire. To make changes to the asset, click on the ELLIPSIS (three dots) to the far right of the asset and select EDIT ASSET from the dropdown.
- On the next page, rename the asset to include either the asset address or the location name so you have a way to identify where it came from. In this example, we have added CHICAGO in parentheses so we know that the asset originated from this location.
- Under the SENSORS section, locate the ELLIPSIS (three dots) on the far right, click on it, and select EDIT SENSOR. A modal window will appear.
Note: If you wish to add tags to further identify the asset, you can do so under the TAGS field. - Under the DEVICE ID field, select UNASSIGN. Click SAVE to apply changes.
Note: Unassigning the sensor does not delete historical data (the data is saved with the asset and sensor). This practice improves your device health reports, stopping unnecessary alarms and also stopping the sensor from displaying as "offline."
Never delete a sensor as that permanently deletes the historical data. - Finally, select CHANGE LOCATION (to the right of CREATE ASSET IN) to open a modal window. Under SELECT NEW LOCATION, find the location where your organization moves retired assets. In this example, the location we're using is called CLOSED/RETIRED. Click SAVE to apply changes.
- Before leaving the EDIT ASSET page, make sure you click the SAVE button in the bottom right corner to finish retiring the asset.
How to Move/Retire a Location
- In the last step, we located the asset we want to retire. To make changes to the asset, click on the ELLIPSIS (three dots) to the far right of the asset and select EDIT ASSET from the dropdown.
- You will now be on the EDIT LOCATION page. Most of the fields can remain the same, however, you will want to change the PARENT LOCATION to the CLOSED/RETIRED folder. In this example, the folder is named RETIRED LOCATION.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the SAVE button in the bottom right corner to apply changes.
